One Laptop Per Child Project

Our mission at Rehnuma Public School in Azam Basti is to provide education and a taste of childhood to children from very poor backgrounds who would otherwise be pressed into work or taking over household responsibilities as their parents struggle to just feed them.

olpc-xo-2 In our effort to make this happen we have been recently introduced to the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project. OLPC was founded in 2002 by MIT Professor Nicholas Negroponte who experienced first-hand how connected laptops transformed the lives of children and their families in a remote Cambodian village. He questioned what the world would be like if every child in the world had access to a computer, what potential could be unlocked? What problems could be solved? These questions eventually led to the foundation of One Laptop per Child, and the creation of the XO laptop. For more information please go to http://laptop.org/visionSNV35660

In their own words the OLPC’s mission is to provide a means for learning, self-expression, and exploration to the nearly two billion children of the developing world with little or no access to education. While children are by nature eager for knowledge, many countries have insufficient resources to devote to education—sometimes less than $20 per year per child (compared to an average of $7,500 in the United States). By giving children their very own connected XO laptop, we are giving them a window to the outside world, access to vast amounts of information, a way to connect with each other, and a springboard into their future. And we’re also helping these countries develop an essential resource—educated, empowered children.SNV35659

Rehnuma Public School in Azam Basti, Karachi Pakistan was donated 10 free laptops by the OLPC organization as an experiment on how we can use these to better educate our children. We have managed to raise funds to buy another 140 additional laptops to meet the true objectives of this project of giving each child in our school between the ages of 6 years and 12 years a laptop of their own to use and own. If through this endeavor we are able to inspire even a quarter of our children to make a success of their lives through education and enterprise, we will have met our objective to make the world a better place for these children.

Funds now collected will go towards the running costs of these 150 laptops and in training our teachers to help the children make full use of these laptops . If you wish to help us in this project please contact us . Your help in both kind and finances would be very welcome. We are posting some of our newest pictures here.SNV35663
